Our story, our mission, our impact

The goal of UCSD is to help historically underserved and economically disadvantaged communities—including DACs—attain lasting economic independence. We achieve this by providing hands-on training, technical assistance to farmers, business development support, educational workshops, and rural development programs. Ultimately, we aim to break systemic barriers, build local capacity, and empower individuals and communities to sustain themselves long after our direct support ends.

Why we started: bridging the opportunity gap

What inspired us to start UCSD was seeing hardworking people—farmers, entrepreneurs, and families—locked out of opportunities not because they lacked talent, but because they lacked access. We watched small-scale farmers lose everything after one bad season with no one to teach them sustainable techniques. We met single mothers with brilliant ideas who couldn't write a business plan or open a bank account. The main problem we saw was a system that left underserved communities and Disadvantaged Communities (DACs) behind—not by accident, but by neglect. Traditional support didn't reach those who needed it most. So we built a different kind of organization: one that goes directly into these communities, stays as long as it takes, and measures success by how many people no longer need us to survive. That's what inspired us, and that's what keeps us going.

Transforming lives: from struggle to sustainable independence

The biggest difference UCSD makes is turning isolation into connection and struggle into sustainable independence. We don’t just provide resources—we build lasting partnerships that empower people to solve their own problems and lift their communities. One success story: James, a veteran and small-scale farmer in a rural DAC, was losing money every season because he couldn’t access markets or manage his finances. He was ready to give up. We helped him write a business plan, learn bookkeeping, and connect with local buyers. Within a year, James turned a profit for the first time. He now employs two neighbors and mentors other veteran farmers. More importantly, he no longer feels forgotten. That’s the difference we make—not just survival, but thriving, and then paying it forward.

Our guiding principles: commitment to lasting change

We believe that talent and drive are universal, but opportunity is not—so we go where help is needed most. We believe in listening before acting, because communities know their own problems best. We believe in staying for the long haul, not offering quick fixes and walking away. We believe that economic independence is a human right, not a privilege for the few. We believe in measuring success by how many people no longer need us to survive. We believe in treating every farmer, entrepreneur, and family with dignity, respect, and genuine care—never as a case number. We believe in collaboration over competition, lifting others as we rise. And we believe that small, consistent actions create lasting change. These principles guide everything we do every single day.

"UCSD provided invaluable support that transformed my business. Their dedication to empowering entrepreneurs is truly remarkable."
