Maria's journey: from backyard garden to thriving cooperative
One of the most impactful stories we’ve witnessed is about a single mother named Maria, living in a small, rural Designated Assisted Community (DAC) where jobs were almost nonexistent. She had been growing vegetables in her backyard just to feed her children, but she dreamed of turning it into a small business. She didn’t know where to start—no business plan, no funding, no confidence.

Empowering individuals, strengthening communities
We met Maria at a community workshop we hosted in her town. Over the next several months, we worked closely with her: teaching her basic bookkeeping, helping her access a microloan, connecting her with local markets, and even providing hands-on technical assistance to improve her crop yields. Maria faced setbacks—a failed harvest, self-doubt, family pressure to give up—but we stayed beside her through every challenge.

Building a legacy of economic independence
Today, Maria runs a thriving farm-to-table cooperative that supplies fresh produce to three local schools and a farmers’ market. She has hired two other single mothers from her community. More than that, she now leads our monthly community workshops, sharing her experience and inspiring others. Her success is a testament to the power of sustained support and equitable access.
"Our efforts have made a real difference in both individual lives and entire communities in measurable and meaningful ways."

The ripple effect: transforming individuals and communities
At the individual level, we've seen farmers go from barely breaking even to earning stable incomes because of our technical assistance and market connections. We've watched entrepreneurs who couldn't afford a business license transform into small business owners who now employ their neighbors. Parents who once relied on food assistance have built home-based enterprises that put their children through school. People who felt invisible and unheard now sit at planning tables, lead workshops, and advocate for their own communities.
At the community level, the ripple effects are even more powerful. We help entrepreneurs and farmers write clear, practical business plans and learn essential bookkeeping skills—so they can track their income, manage expenses, and confidently apply for loans or grants.
Beyond the numbers: stories that inspire action
It’s important for visitors to hear these stories because behind every statistic—every underserved community, every DAC, every economically disadvantaged entrepreneur—there is a real person with a dream, a struggle, and a breaking point. Stories like Maria’s remind visitors that our work isn’t abstract; it’s about neighbors, families, and futures. After reading them, we hope visitors feel moved, but not just sad—inspired and empowered. We want them to feel a sense of shared humanity and the belief that change is possible. Most of all, we hope they ask, “What can I do?” Whether that means donating, volunteering, sharing our mission, or simply seeing underserved communities with new eyes—we want visitors to leave ready to act, partner, or advocate. Because stories don’t just inform; they call us to be part of the solution.
